How To Get A Semaglutide Prescription For Weight Loss

Semaglutide is a medication marketed under the brand name Wegovy. It is FDA-approved for weight loss in overweight and obese adults who have weight-related health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Wegovy is used to lower the risk of cardiovascular problems (heart attack, stroke, or death) in people who have heart disease and are either overweight or obese.

It may also be used to maintain weight loss. Semaglutide works by decreasing appetite and slowing food movement through your body, producing the feeling of fullness. This medication is often used together with diet and exercise. The FDA has approved these three Semaglutide products:

  • Ozempic injection and Rybelsus tablets:  FDA-approved to reduce blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and known heart disease. This medication is often used together with diet and exercise.
  • Wegovy injection:FDA-approved to help adults and children aged 12 years and older with obesity. It also may help some adults with excess weight who have weight-related medical problems to lose weight and keep the weight off. This medication is often used together with diet and exercise.

All three medications are only available with a prescription, and there are no FDA-approved generic versions.

How To Get A Semaglutide Prescription For Weight Loss?

Semaglutide is only available with a prescription from a healthcare professional. If you want to lose weight, talk to your family healthcare provider first. They know your personal and family medical history and can help you create the most suitable weight loss plan. Also, you must meet specific medical criteria to obtain a prescription.

They will do a detailed medical examination to determine if you qualify for a Semaglutide prescription for weight loss. Your healthcare provider may also ask about your lifestyle, diet, exercise habits, and psychological or emotional factors. You will need to provide information about your current weight, medical history, and weight loss goals.

Semaglutide (Wegovy) is primarily recommended for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater who have at least one weight-related health problem. It is also recommended for those with a BMI of 30 or greater. Your insurance may cover the cost of Semaglutide if you meet these criteria, although these criteria may vary by brand.

Ozempic and Rybelsus are recommended for use in people with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic has additional FDA approval for lowering the risk of heart problems in people with type 2 diabetes or heart disease. Some healthcare professionals may prescribe Semaglutide for people who do not meet the above criteria, and those prescriptions will not be covered by insurance.
